Nota Bene, Phi Theta Kappa's Annual Honors Anthology

Poetic Tendencies
by Christy Gant

Alpha Xi Chi Chapter

A chance to speak
     when words elude, to hunt them,
     work them as a smith;
     to blow life into them as glass
     with insatiable possibilities
To leave a legacy
     of treasured time, sculpted and chiseled;
     of moments marred, their scars just as cherished
To discover
     words entombed and stale,
     disentangle them and conceive anew;
     the wrath of the wicked, the quest of the swain,
     visiting the sound of their souls
To share
     secrets exhumed and eclipsed,
     pawned for one another and ourselves
To reach out
To reach in--
     face the zenith and bane of our souls;
     seek the mystery
     and embrace it
To find bliss
To find fear
     in the beauty and horror
     of our collective madness and miracles
     and rejoice in it.
To stay sane
     fighting the spirits and welcoming them
     just the same
A chance to be quiet
     and listen within, perchance to understand,
     or be again beguiled.
