October marks the 20th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a campaign
that has boosted mammograms, pushed for better treatments, and saved lives.
Despite much progress, breast cancer will still take about 40,000 women
from their families in 2004. Phi Theta Kappa's International Service Program,
Conquering Cancer: Continuing the Fight, enlists chapters to
join in the battle against cancer. For program resources and ways to get
involved, visit the International
Service Program online or contact Director of Programs Jennifer
Stanford at 601.984.3532. Read on to learn about two great ways
your chapter can continue the fight against breast cancer this October!
Through
the American Cancer Society's Tell
A Friend® program, specially trained volunteers contact their
friends and family encouraging early detection for breast cancer. Chapters
are encouraged to participate in the Tell A Friend program two times a year,
once in the fall and again around Mother's Day in May, calling mothers, grandmothers,
and friends to remind them to get a mammogram. The fall campaign is designed
to remind women to get a mammogram; the spring campaign is to follow up and
confirm that they actually got the mammogram.
Your chapter
can also participate in Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer®, a noncompetitive walk to save
lives. The average distance of the walk is five miles, and individuals of
all ages are welcome to participate. Other volunteers are also needed to
help at the event with registration, traffic, information and many other
important functions. Find an event in your area by visiting the American
Cancer Society website.
