Colleges and Universities Provide Scholarships to Students Displaced by Hurricane Katrina

The students misplaced by Hurricane Katrina are being offered opportunities by a number of colleges and universities. Minnesota State Colleges and Universities

The 32 Minnesota State Colleges and Universities can accommodate at least 300 students whose college educations were disrupted by Hurricane Katrina. A toll-free number, 1-800-456-8519, has been set up to assist students in finding openings. Besides making openings available at college campuses, the system offers more than 1,000 course sections and hundreds of programs online through Minnesota Online. Students who have access to the Internet and who wish to take online classes can get information at www.minnesotaonline.org.

Mississippi

Any displaced student from LA or AL, is considered an "in-state" student for tuition purposes. No out of state fees to be paid, according to the State Board's Assistant to the Executive Director Jason Pugh.

Savannah College of Art and Design
Savannah, GA

The Savannah College of Art and Design is offering to assist students who were attending other colleges but now are displaced due to Hurricane Katrina. These students are welcome to attend SCAD fall quarter 2005 as transient students with free tuition. Fall quarter at SCAD begins Sept.14 and ends Nov. 22.

Displaced students who wish to attend SCAD in Savannah or Atlanta on a transient basis should contact the admission office at admission@scad.edu or call toll-free in Savannah at 800.869.7223 or toll-free in Atlanta at 877.722.3285. These students may complete the application form online. They must provide documentation that they were enrolled and had paid tuition for fall 2005 in a college or university closed as a result of Hurricane Katrina. The program is available for the fall quarter only and does not include housing or meals.

Sloan Semester

More than 200 colleges and universities are participating in the program, to provide free online courses during an accelerated semester to students who have been displaced by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The students will be transient students during this online semester, and the credit for the classes will be transferred to their home institutions. It's a way for these students to continue their education, even though their college may not be open this semester. Begins Monday, October 10.

Vincennes University
Vincennes, Indiana

Vincennes University has announced that it will accept up to 20 students who have had their college education disrupted due to Hurricane Katrina. VU will provide full tuition and room expenses. VU's food service contractor (Sodexho, Inc.) will also provide 19 meals-per-week food plans to up to 20 such students.

To be eligible for the assistance, students must show that their schools have been closed at least for the Fall semester, provide some documentation that they were enrolled for Fall 2005, and accept responsibility for books and miscellaneous expenses.
