2. Encourage schools to incorporate healthier foods and snacks
in their cafeterias and vending machines, and more physical education into their
curriculum.
3. Volunteer at a Hope Lodge - a home-away-from-home for cancer
patients and their loved ones, providing free non-medical lodging while they undergo
outpatient treatment.
4. Encourage those affected by cancer to get involved in "I Can
Cope" - educational classes providing information about diagnosis,
treatment and coping for people with cancer, their families and friends.
5. Sponsor a Look Good…Feel Better Program that allows
cancer patients to develop skills and techniques to overcome the appearance-related
side effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments including makeup, skin care
and nailcare.
6. Sign up for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer - a walk/run
event to raise funds specifically designated for breast cancer research and
programs.
7. Know someone struggling with breast cancer? Introduce them to Reach to
Recovery, a one-to-one support program for women and men facing or living
with breast cancer. Reach to Recovery volunteers are breast cancer survivors who are
trained by the American Cancer Society.
8. Sign up to drive cancer patients to their treatments as part of the
Road to Recovery Program.
9. Volunteer to encourage women you know to have a mammogram as part of the
Tell a Friend Program.
10. Distribute "tlc" catalogs for women with cancer. Free copies
can be ordered by calling 800.850.9445 (Limit: 300).
11. Collect toys for children's hospitals.
12. Organize a team for Relay for Life, the largest fundraising
event for the American Cancer Society.
13. Make a personal commitment to your own good health.
14. Join the ACS Action Network to show your support for
legislative issues related to cancer.
15. Promote the Great American Smokeout event in November (the
third Thursday of the month).
16. Teach youth refusal skills so they don't start smoking.
17. Host a forum series on the cancer issues related to men and
women.
18. Sponsor an informational booth on sun safety at your campus
and community centers.
19. Publicize the ACS Guidelines for Diet, Nutrition and Cancer
Prevention.
20. Start a walking club or aerobics class on campus to
encourage people to exercise on a regular basis.
21. Distribute samples of sunscreen to youth and adults at a
beach, park or other recreational area.
22. Sponsor a fundraiser with the proceeds earmarked for your
local American Cancer Society office.
23. Volunteer to be a facilitator for the 'freshstart'
program, the American Cancer Society's two-week program to help smokers
quit the habit.
24. Volunteer at a summer camp for children with cancer.
25. Find out about the American Cancer Society's College and Camp
Scholarship Programs and encourage eligible young people to apply.
