Hope Lodge to Receive Convention Service Project Donations

Hope Lodge, the American Cancer Society's free, temporary housing facility for cancer patients and their families, will be the beneficiary of Phi Theta Kappa's 2004 International Convention Service Project. Annually the Service Project gives Convention attendees an opportunity to give back to the host area through assistance to a local service organization. For a Hope Lodge Wish List and more information, visit the Convention website at http://convention.ptk.org/servproj.html.

Focus Areas

Prevention
In the fall of 2001, the National Cancer Legislation Advisory Committee issued a report that concluded with this stern warning: "If we fail to act, our nation will face a major health care crisis as well as the burden of knowing that this crisis was largely preventable."

The American Cancer Society prevention programs include tobacco control, diet and exercise, comprehensive school health education and reducing the risk of skin cancer.

Fundraising
Since 1946, the Society has invested more than $2.4 billion in cancer research. Because of research, the relative five-year survival rate for cancer is now up to 60 percent, and more than eight million cancer survivors are alive today. Relay for Life® and Making Strides Against Breast Cancer® are two major fundraising events for the American Cancer Society.

Service
Those who have been touched by cancer know the uncertainty and despair the disease can bring. The American Cancer Society offers cancer patients, survivors and their families a place to turn 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for understanding, guidance and support. The Society provides a variety of services including patient and family education, service and support programs.

Advocacy
Every day, legislators and policymakers make decisions that affect the lives of current and potential cancer patients and survivors. Advocacy efforts by American Cancer Society volunteers influence lawmakers to make the right decisions regarding cancer-related issues including research funding, access to quality health care and regulation of tobacco.
