2+2 program in teacher education

Central Piedmont Community College's team - Suzanne Williams, Cynthia Johnston, Helen Kolman, and David Royster of the University of North Carolina - has been working hard all year to achieve the goals set at the Phi Theta Kappa National Science and Math Teacher Preparation Conference I in New Orleans last spring. Our primary goal was to articulate a 2+2 teacher preparation program for early childhood, special education, elementary, middle grades math and secondary math. Templates for the programs have been created. The initial models had been approved by the College of Education at UNC Charlotte. However, UNC Charlotte has revised their general education core, so we are waiting for final core decisions; revisions can then be made to the templates and formal contractual approval may be completed.

In the interest of successful transition to our partner university, our second goal was to inform and train counselors and advisors. This has been accomplished through the development of handbooks, as well as an information session highlighting the new articulation agreement and the successful teacher education program at El Camino College, our mentoring college. We have continued to keep counselors informed of our progress through meetings of our teacher education advisory committee.

Marketing the program to the public is another goal of the initial phase of 2+2 teacher education at CPCC. In addition to a brochure describing the program and a local TV appearance, in which the dean of education at UNC-Charlotte highlighted the new 2+2 program, we are planning a Future Teachers Conference to be held at a CPCC campus in conjunction with UNC-Charlotte. Our work this past year has encouraged us to apply for a NSF/ATE grant. We are interested in hearing from community colleges which were newly entering the teacher education arena when they received an NSF grant.
