North Harris Montgomery Community College District (NHMCCD), TX
- a district-wide teacher preparation initiative

North Harris Montgomery College District's (NHMCCD) team members - Bonnie Longnion, Lovelyn Jeanes, Pat Stone, Maureen Loiacano, Eric Wildman, and Kathleen Russell - have been reaping the rewards of the production of a district-wide brochure and website for teacher education. The colleges and school districts have been distributing the brochures. We are still busy adding details to our website. We are currently designing a video to provide yet another vehicle of communication to our prospective students. The video will be available on the website.

Our team has been a part of our NHMCCD larger committee comprised of 12 school districts, colleges, and several university partners. We have been very busy meeting, collaborating, developing, and implementing the following teacher education initiatives: 1) implemented two of the four new education courses; 2) implemented two new field of study transfer programs for certification - early childhood through fourth grade and fourth grade through eighth grade; 3) strengthened articulation agreements with teacher education divisions of universities; 4) submitted three grant proposals and working on two additional ones; 5) implemented three certification programs (Kingwood College, North Harris College, and Cy-Fair College) for individuals with degrees (215 individuals are enrolled and 91 additional students will begin cohorts by April) including science, math, and technology applications; 6) submitted a fourth certification program for approval to begin in summer, 2003 (Tomball College); trained over 300 para-educators; 7) developing curriculum for alternative certification programs; 8) working with school districts on a co-hort in-service, preservice, and grow-your-own programs for para- educators; 9) working at the state level with other colleges and universities to propose and develop an AAT with multiple specializations; 10) working with school districts on compliance to No Child Left Behind Act.

We appreciate the assistance of our mentors, Carla Goble, Tulsa Community College, and Deborah Norris, Oklahoma State University, and we look forward to fulfilling the promise of a district-wide community college role in teacher education initiatives.
