Preparing Tomorrow's Science and Math Teachers Summer
2003 |
Northampton Community College's (NCC) team - Kathleen Benyo, Sharon Lee-Bond, Charles Rine-himer, Debora Plehn-Dujowich, and Shawn Brown of East Stroudsburg University - reports that Preparing Tomorrow's Science and Math Teachers: The Community College Response, has guided us in our efforts to revise a general biology course to meet the needs of early childhood education and elementary education majors. Our revised biology course provides more investigative laboratory activities, integrates technology and inquiry-based learning strategies, relates course content with Pennsylvania's education standards, requires a field observation activity, and offers a service-learning option. Our team received assistance from a variety of sources. Kerri Armstrong, Community College of Philadelphia, and Penny Hammrich, Temple University, are our mentors. Joe Rahs, Jr., elementary science curriculum coordinator, Bethlehem Area School District, is our liaison with local school districts. Since many of our graduates transfer to East Stroudsburg University, our 4-year college partner professor Shawn Brown is performing an important role by helping us follow the progress of our education students. The first offering of the revised general biology course reflected a substantial enrollment of elementary education and early childhood education majors. Additional course sections are planned for future semesters. Team members participated in the college-sponsored Academic Fest, a recruiting fair for prospective NCC students by supplying informational brochures and displays to promote education as a career choice, to advertise the new biology course, and to respond to questions posed by prospective students and family members. To promote and extend collaboration, the team has discussed common goals for pre-service teachers with other departments. Team members Sharon Lee-Bond and Debora Plehn-Dujowich organized and advise the science club, including the development of a science club website. Sharon and Debora developed a new course elective, History of Science. The new history course is popular among education majors with an interest in science. We have distributed promotional material to local high school and campus students. Kathleen Benyo is compiling a Transfer Handbook For Education Majors to assist students in selecting courses for seamless transfer to other institutions. We are committed to promoting elementary education and early childhood education in our community and to expanding current science course offerings for our pre-service teachers.
