Northeast Community College, Norfolk, NE
… new and revised math and science courses for future teachers

Northeast Community College's team - Dave Heidt, Beth Welke, Sally Harms, and Donna Niemeyer - has achieved the primary objectives of the action plan developed last spring. Our targeted course, Mathematics for Elementary Teachers, was revised. A section of General Biology, designated for elementary education majors, integrated classroom applications. Both of these revised courses were offered fall semester. Two new courses were developed and offered for spring semester-Geometry for Elementary Education and Applied Chemistry for Elementary Education, as well as a revised Physical Science for Elementary Education course. Requests have been sent to transfer institutions to assess transferability for these newly developed courses.

Northeast Community College, in partnership with another area community college, a state college and the state university received a Dep-artment of Education career ladder grant to provide classes that will lead first to an associate's degree and ultimately to a bachelor's degree in elementary education for minority and bilingual para-professionals in seven area school districts. Initial implementation of this career ladder grant began this spring semester with a cohort group of thirty para-professionals.

Northeast Community College has also identified a program of study leading to an Associate's degree for para-professionals, and has begun to provide the courses to surrounding communities. This degree will qualify para-professionals as mandated by the No Child Left Behind act and will also qualify them to serve as local substitute teachers. Two team members made a reverse site visit to our mentor, Pat Cunniff's institution, Prince George's Community College. They benefited greatly from visiting the instructors and classrooms of various science and math classes for elementary education majors. Additional promotion of the Associate of Arts degree for para-professionals continues, and it is anticipated that school districts will increasingly request these classes so that their para-professionals may maintain their qualifications under federal guidelines.

Northeast Community College appreciated the opportunity to work with Phi Theta Kappa on this project, in particular with our mentor, Pat Cunniff. Our college has made significant advances in its education program and we anticipate further changes to benefit future teachers and, ultimately, future students.
