News From NSF

Phi Theta Kappa’s project, Preparing Tomorrow’s Science and Math Teachers, is an excellent example of the many activities and projects supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in recognition of the important role of two-year colleges in the preparation of future teachers of science and mathematics. We at NSF are very pleased with the substantial impact that the Phi Theta Kappa project is having on teacher preparation in two-year colleges.

NSF Opportunities for Community Colleges

The NSF Division of Undergraduate Education offers several opportunities for two-year colleges seeking to improve science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education, including the education of future teachers.

The Advanced Technological Education Program (ATE) promotes improvement in technological education through curriculum development, professional development of college faculty and secondary school teachers, and other activities. The program includes articulation partnerships to facilitate the transition from two-year to four-year college for students preparing for technology-based careers or K-12 teaching careers.

The Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement Program continues to offer opportunities for two-year colleges to develop educational materials, to adapt and implement courses and curriculum, and to participate in national dissemination efforts.

The Teacher Professional Continuum Program, (TPC) introduced this year, combines teacher preparation and inservice teacher enhancement under one program, offering four tracks all focusing on the continuum of teacher development. Research Studies; Research and Development of Educational Models and Systems; Professional Resources Development; and Conferences and Symposia. The TPC program, jointly administered by the Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education (ESIE) division of DUE, replaces previous teacher preparation and teacher enhancement programs. The solicitation is on the web at http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2003/nsf03534/nsf03534.htm. Two-year colleges are encouraged to participate with four-year colleges and universities in these programs.

The Math and Science Partnership Program, (MSP), now in its second year, seeks to improve K-12 mathematics and science teaching and learning through partnerships between institutions of higher education and K-12 school districts. Two-year colleges are encouraged to participate as partner organizations in MSP projects because of the strong role they play in the preparation and professional development of the K-12 mathematics and science teacher workforce. Information about the MSP program can be found at https://www.ehr.nsf.gov/msp/.

For information about all DUE programs and lists of awards please consult the DUE website at http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/ehr/DUE/. We urge you to contact the program officers listed in the program solicitations to find the most appropriate program for your ideas.

Best wishes,
Joan T. Prival, Program Director Division of Undergraduate Education

Elizabeth J. Teles, Acting Division Director Division of Undergraduate Education
