Preparing Tomorrow's Science and Math Teachers Summer
2003 |
South Mountain Community College's team - Helen Smith, Amy MacPherson, Ken Roberts, Ann Linder and Joan McCarter - developed a Computer Usage and Applications course specifically designed for pre-service teachers. In addition, the math courses in our Dynamic Learning Pre-Service Teacher Education Program were realigned to use best practices, while meeting competencies revised by the Maricopa District Mathematics Instructional Council. The addition of a second Mathematics for Elementary Teachers course challenged the logistics of our schedule, but we have met the challenge! Our Dynamic Learning Program was designed as a four-semester program for a single cohort of fifty students; Plans to increase this to a second cohort are being considered. Since many of our students begin their collegiate mathematics sequence at the developmental level, some students have to take as many as six courses to complete the math requirements. This spring, for the first time, the two Mathematics for Elementary Teachers courses will be offered in eight week blocks so that students can complete both in one semester. In addition, an intensive two-week Mathematics Concepts/Applications course is scheduled. This will allow students to review arithmetic and begin the algebra sequence during their first semester with the Dynamic Learning Program. A Future Teachers Conference is scheduled for November 2003, with plans already underway for student participation. We experienced a minor setback when the advisor for the Future Educators Association accepted employment at another college, but with the help of some of our honors students, the conference will go on! We would appreciate hearing about the successes of other teams planning similar conferences. Finally, in January, Helen Smith traveled to Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn, Michigan for a reverse site visit. Time to observe classes, to share experiences, to dialogue about our philosophy of education and our responsibilities as pre-education faculty, and to appreciate the positive culture so evident at Henry Ford Community College, made this visit one of the highlights of this Phi Theta Kappa experience. South Mountain Community College is very appreciative of the opportunity to participate in this project. Helen Smith:helen.smith@smcmail.maricopa.edu
