Teacher Preparation Progress Reported by Round I Colleges

Representatives from all eighteen community colleges participating in the first round of Phi Theta Kappa’s NSF-supported Preparing Tomorrow’s Science & Math Teachers: The Community College Response project gathered last fall in Washington, D.C. They met to share their accomplishments and their remaining challenges as they work to develop teacher preparation programs, courses, and activities for future science and mathematics teachers on their campuses. Panel presentations, moderated by project mentors and resource persons, addressed the following topics:

  • Preservice Activities and Courses for Future Math and Science Teachers
  • Why a Teacher Preparation Track? Why at the Community College?
  • Lifting a Teacher Preparation Plan Off the Ground
  • Unique Articulation Modules for Teacher Preparation at Community Colleges
  • Teacher Preparation Learning Communities with Linked Courses for Biology and Math
  • Internal and External Support for Teacher Preparation
  • Challenges in Teacher Preparation: Coordination and Resources

Case studies describing in detail how each of the eighteen colleges accomplished their initial project goals will be published by Phi Theta Kappa as a monograph in August, 2003.

Complimentary copies will be sent to all community colleges presidents, academic deans, chairs of science, math and education departments, and Phi Theta Kappa advisors. Descriptions of the colleges’ activities are also included in this newsletter.
