Features of Phi Theta Kappa's Preparing Tomorrow's Science and Mathematics Teachers at Community Colleges: Round II

Successful applicants will participate in and benefit from the following set of activities and services:

  • NATIONAL SCIENCE & MATH TEACHER PREPARATION CONFERENCE I, February 20-22, 2004, Washington, DC: Assigned mentoring teams will work intensively with four-member teams from the selected colleges to develop teacher preparation programs for future K-12 science, mathematics, and technology teachers. With assistance from their assigned mentors and based upon their mentors' teacher preparation program, each college team will develop an Action Plan to be implemented during the project's sixteen month period (February 1, 2004 - May 31, 2005). They will hear presentations on a spectrum of approaches to math, science, and technology teacher preparation programs. They will network with colleagues, and learn about NSF grant opportunities. Travel support for three persons of the four-member team from each selected college will be provided by Phi Theta Kappa.

  • MENTORING SERVICES: Six mentoring teams with experience and expertise in teacher preparation programs for prospective science, math, and technology teachers will serve as advisors to the selected colleges. They will work directly with each college team at the first National Science and Math Teacher Preparation Conference, and via site visits, e-mail, telephone, and fax throughout the sixteen month project period. Mentors will be available to their teams on an ongoing basis to provide additional resources, contacts, and assistance.

  • Preparing Tomorrow's Science & Math Teachers News, reporting the progress of the selected colleges, and other news from NSF and Phi Theta Kappa, will be published throughout the project period. Included also will be excerpts from presentations made at the national conferences, articles by mentors, news of professional meetings, and other teacher preparation resources.
