28 October New Phi Theta Kappa Chapters Chartered in California, Louisiana and North Carolina Tweet October 28, 2011 Engagement, Press Room Engagement, Press Room 0 JACKSON, MS - Three new chapters of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society have been chartered during the month of October at Heald College-Modesto in Salida, California; Louisiana Delta Community College in Monroe; and Durham Technical Community College in North Carolina. Louisiana Delta Community College Chartering Ceremony Seventy-six Heald College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the Modesto Campus on October 4. Phi Theta Kappa Chapter Relations Manager Barb Murray served as Society Headquarters representative for the chartering ceremony. Faculty members Amanda Avila, Desi Barbour, Jay Hightman, Daniel Kazakos and David Bentz will serve as advisors for the new Beta Tau Upsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.Thirty-eight Louisiana Delta Community College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on the Monroe Campus on October 17. Phi Theta Kappa's Mississippi/Louisiana Regional Coordinator Amy Wolgamott served as the Headquarters representative for the chartering ceremony. Faculty members Bradley, Kirk, Janice McDougal, Annie Mckinney, Charles Banner, Ryan Pierce, Sharon Bowman and Darian Atkins will serve as advisors for the new Beta Rho Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.Thirty Durham Technical Community College students were inducted as charter members in a ceremony held on campus October 28. Chapter Relations Manager Phylliss Duvall served as the Headquarters representative. Faculty member Tracy Mancini will serve as advisor for the new Beta Tau Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.To receive an invitation to membership in Phi Theta Kappa students must have completed at least 12 hours of coursework that may be applied to an associate degree, must generally have a grade point average of 3.5; and adhere to the standards of the Society. In order to charter a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa a college must be a regionally accredited institution offering associate degree programs.Members of Phi Theta Kappa may apply for more than $37 million in transfer scholarships, provided exclusively to Society members by more than 700 senior institutions. In addition Phi Theta Kappa offers members numerous opportunities for participation in honors programs, leadership training, and service to their communities.Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, is the largest honor society in higher education with 1,275 chapters on college campuses in all 50 of the United States, Canada, Germany, the Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, the British Virgin Islands, the United Arab Emirates and U.S. territorial possessions.
