Anthony Ames, District III International Vice President, is a member of Tau Phi Chapter, Des Moines Area Community College, Boone Campus, in Iowa.
Anthony is an Education major who plans to teach special education with an emphasis on severe and profound disabilities at the high school level.
Anthony feels that Phi Theta Kappa is "in his blood;" his mother was inducted into the same chapter at her community college in the 1970s. The leadership opportunities that membership afforded him, as well as the opportunities to serve both his college and his community, led him to eagerly accept his invitation to join. He served as both a chapter and regional officer before becoming chapter president.
Anthony helped lead his team of fellow regional officers when they were transitioning to a new Coordinator and lost two officers. He was also instrumental in growing his local chapter when officers and numerous members were lost due to graduation.
For Anthony, the increasing cost of college tuition and textbooks is heavily impacting today's students. He supports projects such as the Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship, which can help students overcome the obstacles associated with rising costs.
Anthony was one of the first 100 Phi Theta Kappa members to achieve Five Star Competitive Edge status. He was one of 20 students in Iowa chosen to attend Leadership Iowa University, a program designed for future leaders, and he has served as editor of his college's newspaper. He has been inducted into the National Honors Society and the Scholastic Honors Society.
