Counting Down to the Five Star Plan Reporting Deadline

More than 700 Phi Theta Kappa chapters set a Five Star Chapter Plan Goal in 2013. To receive your hard-earned recognition, we encourage you to report your progress by Wednesday, January 29.

The Five Star Chapter Plan is a roadmap for creating strong chapters, which in turn creates strong members and a robust college campus. The plan puts the mission of Phi Theta Kappa into action through five levels of engagement that progress from local, campus involvement to regional and international involvement.

“One of the important roles Phi Theta Kappa plays is cultivating leadership,” said Dr. Cindy Miles, Chancellor of the Grossmont-Cuyamaca Community College District in California. “To meet our college completion and transfer goals, we need students as strong, engaged partners.”

All Phi Theta Kappa chapters are encouraged to participate at the level that fits them best each year. Participation at every level of the Five Star Plan is critical to fulfilling the mission of Phi Theta Kappa, said Jennifer Stanford, the Society’s Chief Student Engagement Officer.

January 29 is a big day at Phi Theta Kappa – it’s also the deadline to submit Hallmark Awards applications. So don’t let the Five Star reporting deadline get lost in the shuffle. Here’s what you need to know now to ensure your chapter gets the full recognition it deserves.

Do not wait until the deadline to report your chapter’s progress. Both advisors and chapter officers may report progress in the Five Star Chapter Plan as activities are completed throughout the year at

Hallmark Awards participation will be updated in early February, following the January 29 deadline for submitting applications. Phi Theta Kappa Headquarters Staff will automatically update the activity for chapters submitting entries after the Hallmark Awards deadline.

Chapters will be recognized for their 2013 Five Star achievements in the spring of 2014. Chapters are recognized for the highest level for which they completed AND reported all the requirements in addition to completing and reporting all of the requirements of the levels below that highest level. There are three levels of recognition:

  • Local: An email will be sent to your college president citing the significance of the chapter’s achievement.
  • Regional: The chapter will receive the award certificate during your region’s annual awards presentation in the spring.
  • International: The achievement will be listed on Phi Theta Kappa’s website and at the 2014 Annual Convention.

Information for the 2014 Five Star Chapter Plan will be posted on Phi Theta Kappa’s website in February. A breakdown of the plan can be found in the Chapter Leaders’ Guide to Success, which all advisors will be receiving soon.

The guide includes a suggested timeline aimed at helping you complete your goal. New advisors and chapter presidents will also receive this helpful tool as they are reported to Headquarters throughout the year.

“Every chapter begins anew every calendar year, allowing chapters to have a fresh start and a challenging goal year after year,” Stanford said.
