In an effort to both provide greater recognition to award recipients and reduce the length of Annual Convention General Sessions, Phi Theta Kappa will institute several changes in the presentation of Hallmark Awards at NerdNation 2014 in Orlando, Florida.
Regional, Member and Advisor Award winners will be notified by email in early April prior to the Convention, which will be held April 24-26. Emails will also be sent to the Chapter Advisor, the Regional Coordinator, and the College President/Chapter Administrator announcing the award. Press releases will be distributed prior to Convention.
Award recipients will receive commemorative medallions and ribbons for their Convention name badges upon on-site registration. This will allow for recognition throughout the entirety of Convention, which will in turn provide opportunities for new members and advisors to learn first-hand about the endeavors that lead to such recognition.
It is the Society’s hope that this opportunity to share success for the duration of Convention will help strengthen Phi Theta Kappa members, chapters and advisors as they network with and learn from each other. Award recipients will also be recognized as a group on stage during a Convention general session.
Chapter Awards – including Distinguished Chapters, Honors in Action Project and College Project – will still be announced during the Hallmark Awards Gala, to be held Saturday, April 26.
Notifying winners beforehand will allow for increased recognition before, during and after Convention. These changes will allow the Hallmark Awards Gala, which typically lasts more than two hours, to be reduced about 90 minutes.
“You spoke, and we listened,” said Phi Theta Kappa Executive Director and CEO Dr. Rod Risley. “Finding a way to reduce the length of the general sessions but still fully honor and recognize our members, advisors and regions for their hard work and excellence was certainly a challenge. We feel that the changes we are making will not only increase recognition of award winners, but it will also enhance and improve the overall Convention Experience for all attendees.”
The Regional Coordinator Emeritus Award and the Regional Coordinator Distinguished Service Award will be presented at the regional meetings held during the Convention, with the recipients also recognized at the Regional Coordinator dinner on April 23 and the Advisors Luncheon on April 26.
Distinguished Regional Officer Awards and Distinguished Regional Officer Team Awards will be presented at the regional meetings. Each winner will receive a medallion and a ribbon for his/her Convention name badge upon check-in. The winners will also be featured during the Flag Ceremony in the opening general session on April 24.
Regional Milestone Awards, Distinguished Region Awards and Continued Excellence for Regions Awards will be presented at the regional meetings, and the winning regions’ members will receive ribbons for their name badges. The regions will also be spotlighted during the Flag Ceremony and the Regional Coordinator dinner.
Distinguished Regional Coordinator Awards will be presented at the regional meetings, and the winners will be showcased during the Flag Ceremony and the Regional Coordinator dinner.
