I almost didn’t apply to be a Social Media Ambassador for PTK Catalyst 2019, but I’m so grateful that I did.

I’ve always loved social media. I enjoy sharing memes, videos, photos, and selfies on my personal pages, but that’s not where my true passion lies. I’m more excited about managing social media accounts for campus clubs, organizations, and campaigns. Creating engaging posts to help promote resources, services, and events that my campus hosts is my favorite thing to do.

If you don’t know what being a Social Media Ambassador (SMA) entails, prepare to have your mind blown! PTK chooses eight SMA’s to promote social media content at Catalyst. How cool is that?

When the SMA application for 2019 opened, I was immediately interested. However, I was hesitant to apply because I didn’t think that I possessed the necessary skills. I felt intimidated and inexperienced and was worried that I wouldn’t be chosen. With encouragement from fellow officers and advisors, I applied. At that moment, I didn’t know that this decision would help me discover my college major and future career.

The application for 2020 is open now, and the process is simple. You will answer some questions about your personal social media accounts and pages that you help manage (if any) and share why you’re interested in being an SMA. You’ll also upload a 15-30 second video telling a little about yourself. Creating the video was the most creative part of the application, since I was able to be myself and show my excitement for social media!

If you are chosen as an SMA, you will create at least 15 social media posts throughout PTK Catalyst, which is where you can be creative! Making posts was one of my favorite parts about being an SMA. I communicated with a variety of audiences; interviewed chapter members and officers; took photos of members, events, workshops, and speakers; and put it together to create interactive and engaging posts. As an SMA, you will share the posts you create with Kierra Handy, the PTK Social Media Coordinator. If she approves, your post will appear on PTK’s official social media pages. Just knowing that a lot of my posts were published on these pages was a dream come true!

My experience as an SMA was probably the most enlightening, educational, and motivating experiences I’ve ever had – one that helped prepare me to major in digital marketing. I developed leadership qualities, built a tight-knit team within my SMA group, and organized multiple social media posts on a variety of platforms. I made strong bonds with my fellow SMA’s that I hope will last a lifetime.

There are also other perks for SMA’s – ones that you can’t pass up! These perks include: credit on the official PTK social media pages, reserved seating at general sessions and awards ceremonies, special photo opportunities with keynote speakers, a backstage tour to see behind-the-scenes at Catalyst, a free PTK Catalyst T-Shirt, and the opportunity to meet PTK staff, members, and officers from all around the world. It honestly doesn’t get better than this.

This position encouraged me to run for a regional position – the Arizona Region Public Information Officer, where I manage our regional social media accounts! Being an SMA also gave me useful experience and skills when I applied for my current Social Media Marketing Internship with Mesa United Way, where I’m gaining digital marketing experience in the nonprofit industry. These positions helped me discover that I want to major in digital marketing and become a Social Media Marketing Director for a nonprofit organization in the future.

Before becoming an SMA, my major was undecided. I didn’t know what career I wanted to pursue. Now, I know those things and so much more! If you love PTK and are interested in business, digital marketing, social media, advertising, or public relations, being a SMA is perfect for you.

If you’re hesitant to apply, it’s totally understandable. Like I said earlier, I almost didn’t even turn my application in! Don’t make that mistake, PTK members! We want YOU to be a SMA at the PTK Catalyst 2020. Apply by Monday, February 17 at 5:00 PM CT.
