UNC Asheville Establishes Transfer Scholarships for PTK Members

UNC Asheville students

The University of North Carolina Asheville (UNCA) is the latest four-year institution to offer a transfer scholarship exclusively for PTK members: $1,000 a year for in-state students and $2,000 a year for out-of-state students.

UNCA is North Carolina’s designated public liberal arts university. It boasts small class sizes, close collaboration with peers and faculty, and high-impact experiences that encourage critical thinking, clear and thoughtful expression, undergraduate research, community engagement, and free and open inquiry.

It is regularly ranked highly in national reports — including seventh in National Public Liberal Arts Colleges on U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 list — and the city of Asheville has been named a top U.S. destination.

Learn more about UNC Asheville and its transfer opportunities for PTK members in this brief Q&A.

Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for PTK members:

At UNC Asheville, we strive to recognize excellence in students no matter where they are. When we learned of Phi Theta Kappa and the great work the chapters and members are doing in their communities, we knew we wanted to be involved in some way. We also acknowledge that transfer students don’t typically receive as much financial assistance as first-year students do, and we wanted to work toward closing that gap. So, we are now offering $1,000 per year for two years to PTK students in North Carolina and $2,000 per year for two years to out-of-state PTK students (due to the difference in tuition). This scholarship is stackable with other scholarships and grants.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

UNC Asheville’s Assistant Director of Admission is a staff member dedicated entirely to working with transfer students, in recognition of the important role that transfer students play in shaping our campus. UNCA also has a Living Learning Community for transfer students who are interested in living on campus in a micro-community of other transfer students with whom to bond and share experiences. Called the Transfer Living Community (TLC), we believe the perspective of the transfer student is one worth highlighting. TLC residents will learn how to lean into their time on campus, further their personal development, and create community.

In your opinion, what is one of the most impressive things about your college?

At UNC Asheville, you don’t have to wait until you graduate to make a difference in the world. UNCA is ranked in the top two nationally on the “Best Schools for Making an Impact” list — #1 in 2016 and #2 in 2018 — The Princeton Review guidebook, Colleges that Pay You Back: The 200 Best Value Colleges and What it Takes to Get In. Our students are experienced researchers, published writers, recorded musicians, and recognized leaders in their communities, all while still in school. We are truly an institution that strives to provide students with every opportunity and resource needed to excel in whatever way you choose.
