Givens To Receive Phi Theta Kappa Founders Medal Award

April 27, 2022

Kelly Givens, a student at John Tyler Community College, has been named the 2022 Founders Medal Award recipient. Givens will receive the award from Phi Theta Kappa CEO Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner at her graduation ceremony on May 13, 2022.

This award recognizes one graduating PTK member who has best expressed the value of a community college education.

“I would tell anyone asking me for school advice to start with their local community college. It is such a valuable community resource,” said Givens. “If you need a technical certificate or just a few classes, or you want to start a longer college career, I think this is the place to start. They made the process less overwhelming, and you felt a part of a local community.”

A mother of two, Givens enrolled at John Tyler Community College after over 20 years in the workforce. She will graduate this Spring with an associate degree in Health Sciences. After graduation, she intends to pursue a career as a radiologic technologist.

“Community college students come from all walks of life. Some enroll immediately after high school; while others, like Kelly, are parents who have deferred their own dreams while raising children,” said Phi Theta Kappa’s President and CEO, Dr. Lynn Tincher-Ladner. “I am so proud of Kelly and the students she represents—the ones who know that taking advantage of the quality, affordability, and flexibility of America’s community colleges is a smart choice.”
