Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for members of Phi Theta Kappa.

To celebrate our North Carolina PTK students, beginning for new fall 2024 students we have created the
Appalachian Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship that will provide each North Carolina Community College chapter of PTK with one (1) scholarship in the amount of $1,000 for a member of their PTK chapter. Eligible students should notate being a PTK inductee on their transfer application when asked. In addition, we continue to have the Herbert W. Wey Scholarship for Phi Theta Kappans for out-of-state members. Depending on funding, this scholarship provides three-to-five students with a scholarship.

Why does your college feel that it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity for members?

PTK students enhance our campus due to their commitment to academics and their passion for co-curricular, service, and social organizations. We welcome students with such a strong background to join our App State community.

What other opportunities are available for transfer students at your institution to assist them in successfully transitioning from community college?

App State offers Transfer Residence Hall, Transfer Orientation, extensive Transfer Programming throughout the fall and spring semesters, Transfer Student Mentors, two full-time staff dedicated to transfer student’s transition & engagement, Transfer Student Organization, Tau Sigma Honor Society, College of Business Transfer Student Club, and the Veteran Student Organization.

In your opinion, what is one of the most impressive things about your college?

Our dedication to transfer students. The office of Transfer Admissions & Engagement, with 22 full-time staff, ensures that our transfer students journey goes as smoothly and successfully as possible. Right behind that is our location – we are in the mountains of Western North Carolina and offer students all kinds of outdoor activities to enhance their time at App State!

App State has been a PTK Honor Roll institution for the past seven years straight. In addition, App State was named among the best higher education institutions in the Southeast and the nation, receiving recognition for its academics, value, innovation, benefits for student veterans and more from U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Money.com.

More than 50% of our transfer students are the first in their families to go to college, we are THIRD in the UNC System for graduation rates, and out of ALL 4-year colleges and universities in the state of North Carolina, our students graduate with LESS DEBT than most graduates in the entire state, and with average college debt that is well below the national average.
