Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) has named Dr. Daria J. Willis, president of Howard Community College, to its Presidential Advisory Board. Dr. Willis previously served as the state of Washington’s representative, and we are especially grateful to welcome her back as the Maryland representative to PTK’s Presidential Advisory Board.

On the board, she will provide input into the organization’s strategic plan, priorities, and direction. Presidential Advisory Board members advocate for Phi Theta Kappa, its members, and its mission while serving as liaisons between PTK headquarters and the college leaders in their states and advising PTK’s President and CEO, and senior leaders.

“Phi Theta Kappa is at its best when we go beyond recognition and provide students with opportunities to make the most of their college experience,” Dr. Lynn Tincher Ladner, President and CEO of Phi Theta Kappa, said. “And, we would not be able to achieve this without the contributions and support of community college leaders like Dr. Daria Willis.”

Willis is focused on issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring Howard Community College’s culture of care and belonging extends to all students and employees. To build an equitable foundation for students, she has started the process of reorganizing the areas of teaching and learning and student success.

“I am honored to be named to PTK’s Presidential Advisory Board”, Dr. Willis said. “Having previously served in this role for the state of Washington, I am excited to continue this important work in Maryland. This appointment is not just a recognition, but a meaningful opportunity to serve and support a mission that uplifts and empowers students.”

Dr. Willis is a 2021 Aspen Institute Ascend Fellow, dedicated to empowering children and families across the country. She serves on the Howard County Economic Development Authority Board of Directors and was named an Influential Marylander in 2022 by The Daily Record.

In addition to serving as a college president, Willis is an active social media user. She launched her own Instagram Live series, “Conversations from the Couch,” to connect with the community.
