Hampshire College Doubles PTK Scholarship for Transfer Students

Hampshire College was founded in 1965 to radically reimagine liberal arts education. Today, they pride themselves in being an unconventional institution, organized differently from any college in the world. Offering courses in science, technology, math, engineering, fine art, visual art, and performing arts, the small institution located in Amherst, Massachusetts is offering PTK members a new scholarship in the amount of $35,000 (!!!), nearly double of what they have offered in previous years, acknowledging that PTK members have already proven academic excellence and are recognized as leaders in their communities.

Tell us about your college’s new transfer scholarship for members of Phi Theta Kappa.
This award of $35,000 per year goes to selected transfer students applying for the 2022-2023 academic year who are members of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society. This is nearly double what we have offered in previous years, and is on par with our top merit scholarship.

Why does your college feel that it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity for members?
Phi Theta Kappa members are recognized as outstanding students and notable leaders in their communities. We strive to continue creating a community of students who are passionate about learning, willing to self-reflect, and are interested in building community. PTK students often possess these traits and become assets to the Hampshire College community.  

Are there other transfer scholarships that could be stacked with your Phi Theta Kappa award?
Hampshire College is a part of the Massachusetts Independent College Transfer Guarantee, which provides students who have received an associate degree at any partnering Massachusetts Community College guaranteed admission with a minimum GPA or 2.5. Students who are members of PTK, and have an associate degree from a Massachusetts community college are eligible for one of the following awards in addition to their PTK scholarship:

• Massachusetts Guarantee Achievement Award: a $2,000 award to recognize students who have completed their associate degree at a MA community college with a combined academic GPA above 3.0.

• Massachusetts Guarantee Excellence Award: a $4,000 award to recognize students who have completed their associate degree at a MA community college with a combined GPA above 3.5.

• Massachusetts Community College Transfer Award: a $2,000 award for students transferring from MA community colleges who have not earned an associate degree but have completed over 30 credits with a grade of “C” or better, including credits with a “Pass” grade.
