Northern Arizona University (NAU) has updated the eligibility criteria for their Phi Theta Kappa transfer scholarship, making it more accessible for PTK members.

Previously, members were not eligible for the scholarship if they took a break between attending community college and transfer to NAU, but NAU has removed that stipulation from the eligibility criteria, which allows PTK members with breaks in enrollment to qualify for the scholarship.

The scholarship amount is $4,000 per academic year for Arizona residents and $6,000 per academic year for non-residents.

To apply for the scholarship, members will to complete the NAU Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship application and include a copy of their Phi Theta Kappa membership card or certificate and their community college transcripts.

The scholarship is stackable and renewable.

Our office decided to update NAU’s eligibility criteria for our PTK scholarship in an effort to promote access for these high achieving transfer students. Previously NAU had a requirement that a student must have no break in enrollment between the end of their attendance at a community college and their start at NAU in order to be eligible for PTK scholarship consideration. We recognized that there are a variety of educational trajectories for transfer students, which might include breaks in enrollment, and felt that the elimination of this criterion opened more opportunities to tuition support for these students.

Why does your college feel that it is important to offer a scholarship opportunity for members?

Many community college students face financial barriers when considering transferring to four-year institutions. The PTK scholarship reduces these obstacles, promoting greater access to higher education for students from diverse backgrounds. By alleviating financial stress, the scholarship allows students to focus more on their studies and less on economic concerns.

Attracting PTK scholars enriches NAU’s academic environment. These students often bring leadership experience, a commitment to service, and a strong academic record. Their presence contributes to a vibrant, diverse, and academically driven student body, aligning with NAU’s mission to foster excellence in education.

Are there other transfer scholarships that could be stacked with your Phi Theta Kappa award?

The PTK Scholarship at NAU can be stacked with a variety of other scholarships that transfers students are eligible for. The list of our transfer scholarships can be found here. In addition to tuition waivers, all PTK scholars are eligible to apply for additional scholarships through our scholarship application system, ScholarshipUniverse, that can be stacked with the PTK waiver.
