What Phi Theta Kappa Means to Me

Liam Blakeway, 2023-24 International President
Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. It offers students like you and me a competitive edge to completing their associate degree and/or transferring to a four-year college. But personally, PTK extends beyond an honor society, we’re a brotherhood and sisterhood, a family of like-minded high achievers seeking only the best for one another.

With over 3.5 million members, and nearly 1,300 chapters in 11 countries, we offer members not only an extensive network but access to over $246 million in transfer scholarships unique to PTK members, professional skills development through our PTK Edge programs, and nationally recognized Leadership Development Studies, direct access to four-year colleges and universities through PTK Connect, and membership discounts with affiliated partnerships such as Better Help. If I as an international student can achieve great success within PTK, so can you.

What is Phi Theta Kappa? Glad you asked! So, picture this: a first-generation immigrant unsure of his place in the world steps foot on a college campus. That guy was me. I remember my whole life, I’d always question my decisions, whether I made the right choice or…if I could even succeed in college. Then, I discovered Phi Theta Kappa.

It was through Phi Theta Kappa that I found a lifeline, a support system that believed in me when I struggled to believe in myself. Phi Theta Kappa has not only opened doors for me academically but also provided a network of incredibly smart and hardworking people who inspire me to be my best self. Through scholarships, educational programs, and leadership opportunities, Phi Theta Kappa became my guiding light in the darkness of uncertainty. So, what is Phi Theta Kappa? It’s not just a place to celebrate college students but a place for people to grow and succeed beyond their limits. That’s what makes Phi Theta Kappa, Phi Theta Kappa.

Leticia Laranjeira, 2023-24 International Vice President – Division II

Our self-paced leadership and professional development courses, PTK Edges, equip you with essential skills that will set you apart as you pursue your career aspirations. Also, PTK provides numerous scholarship opportunities, helping to alleviate the financial burden of higher education.

One of the greatest benefits of joining Phi Theta Kappa is the network of like-minded students and advisors who will support and guide you throughout your academic journey. Whether your future involves transferring to a four-year university or entering the workforce, Phi Theta Kappa provides you with the tools and support necessary to thrive in your chosen path. Since I joined PTK I’ve grown personally, professionally, and academically, and now I know how to identify, use and enhance my skills. So, I am confident that the Society will help you achieve your goals and aspirations.

Luis Medina, 2023-24 International Vice President – Division III
By definition Phi Theta Kappa is the official international honor society for two-year institutions, recognizing the academic achievement of college students and promoting professional development. But personally, it has meant opportunity.

Through the use of PTK benefits, I have found resources to help me research universities and prepare to transfer; through leadership positions, I have developed skills that have and will continue to prepare me for my future career; and through networking on an international level I have created friendships and connections that I will carry for the rest of my life. Phi Theta Kappa is really whatever you make of it because there is a lot to take advantage of that can help in various areas of your life.

Jasmine Garcia, 2023-24 International Vice President – Division IV
