Guistwhite Scholarship Program
The Guistwhite Scholarship recognizes Phi Theta Kappa members for engagement and participation in Phi Theta Kappa chapter activities and societal programs, while also exhibiting leadership accomplishments and outstanding academic achievement during the pursuit of a bachelor’s degree.
The Guistwhite Scholarship honors Phi Theta Kappa International Honorary Member Dr. Jack Guistwhite and his wife, Margaret. Dr. Guistwhite developed the first transfer scholarship designated exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa members.
Eligibility – Students MUST:
- Be enrolled through December of the application year in a minimum of six (6) semester credit hours [or nine (9) quarter credit hours] of associate degree, college-level coursework.
- Be an active member of Phi Theta Kappa in good standing.
- Hold a minimum of a 3.50 cumulative grade point average out of a possible 4.0 on all college-level coursework completed in the past five years.
- Intend to transfer to a regionally accredited four-year college, attending on a full time basis.
- Have completed a minimum of 45 college-level semester credit hours (or the quarterly equivalent) by December 31st of the application year.
- Hold temporary or permanent residency in the country of the college the student is attending OR must possess a visa considered appropriate by the college.

Tips for Guistwhite Scholarship Applicants
Potential Guistwhite Scholars exhibit increasing participation in their Phi Theta Kappa chapter and other campus activities. They typically initiate partnerships with other campus organizations to increase participation in events on the campus and in the community. Past scholars have established, developed or co-founded programs, projects or organizations designed to improve student life, community environments or campus events. They have organized various efforts on campus or in the community, and they engage with a variety of audiences to increase participation in their chapter activities or to increase membership in their chapter.
What are judges looking for when reviewing Guistwhite Scholarship Applications?
Judges are interested in the discussion question that deals with the most significant Phi Theta Kappa activity the applicant has been involved in, although the application is judged on the holistic picture it gives the judging panels. Applicants who can effectively provide information in all sections provided will find that their application is more competitive and paints a clearer picture of who they are to the judges. Students who begin the application process early and seek the input and guidance of others will typically have a stronger application for this and other programs.
